Battery Storage Tips
It’s always a good idea to have some spare batteries on hand, but did you know that if you store them wrong they could lose charge or even become dangerous? Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind when storing batteries.
- Keep battery contacts from touching each other while in storage, as such contact could cause them to drain charge.
- It’s a good idea to remove batteries from devices you do not expect to use again for several months
- Do not keep rechargeable batteries stored in a charger once they are fully charged. This will greatly reduce their lifetime of use.
- Extreme temperatures and humidity reduce battery performance. There is an urban myth that batteries stored in a fridge or freezer will last longer; this is not only incorrect but could cause the batteries to rupture or otherwise become unsafe.
- If a battery has a crystalline structure on it (likely at its points of connection), it is probably leaking or otherwise corroding. Dispose of it safely. Avoid handling it with your bare hands if possible.
- If a battery is dead or for whatever reason past its usefulness, dispose of it in an environmentally appropriate location. DO NOT simply throw them in the general trash as they contain very toxic components. Many stores will have special receptacles for dead battery disposal.
